Katie Kenny
Artist Teacher
Katie Kenny is an artist, activist and educator based in Co. Wexford, Ireland.
She studied Fine Art specialising in Sculpture and Expanded Practice in the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, where she graduated in 2019. Shortly after she began her postgraduate studies in NCAD where she is studying the Professional Masters of Education in Art and Design (PME).
Kenny’s artist practice investigates gender and farming in Ireland. The aim of her installations is to raise awareness, highlight inequalities and question tradition. Kenny investigates the role of the female on the family farm in Ireland and is concerned by the lack of recognition females receive in the agriculture sector. She questions the patriarchal authority and marginalisation of women in the male-dominated environment. She combines sculpture and video art together. Kenny uses her platform as a way of educating others about gender equality in rural Ireland.

Kenny swapped the studio for the classroom. The projects she teaches are an extension of her art practice. Past exhibitions and installation inspire her Units of Learning. She delivered a range of projects, such as drawing, print-making, low relief sculpture, film studies, expressive lettering and hat design. During the PME, Kenny researched Development Education, which unites her dual identity of an artist and educator. Art allows her to educate the students on social issues, guiding them towards becoming social warriors all while they learn technical skills. Recently, she delivered an accordion book project about Ecofeminism, which stemmed from the Change Lab project she engaged in during the PME. Through sustainable interventions her students questioned their role in creating a more equal world.

She also held a portfolio club for students applying to art college. Participated in access days in NCAD and held an online drawing workshop with NCAD's School of Education as part of the Dublin Learning City Festival.
